Boardwalk Empire
: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, is a book by Nelson Johnson. Johnson says the book took him 20 years to make and it seems like it. It is dense, interesting and exceptionally readable. It tells the story of Enoch “Nucky” Johnson and the rise to power and corruption of Atlantic City.
Johnson is an extremely colorful character having both an obvious “good” side and some fatal flaws. A cross between a politician, a crime boss and simply a man made by times he lived in, Johnson and his story are both vibrant and exciting. He was both a political and a mob boss being known for controlling bootlegging, gambling and prostitution in the twenties during prohibition when Atlantic City was at its near peak of fame. A peak of fame that he was essential in engineering.
This exciting book has recently been made into a television series which stars Steve Buscemi as the title character Nucky Johnson, who’s name has been changed to Nucky Thompson for the series, to allow the producers some latitude with the ultimate fate of the major characters.
Both on screen and in the book the major and interesting action occurs during the time of prohibition, from the 1920’s to the early 30’s. During this time period Johnson was truly at the “top of his game” He had a “Robin Hood like “appeal, living a lavish life but freely giving money away to those in need. So much so that he was always noted by citizens for his kind and generous nature.
In 1933 prohibition was repealed and the wheels began to come off of Johnson's incredible money making machine. He got into minor trouble and setbacks until 1939 when he was indicted for tax evasion charges. Being sentenced to 10 years and serving 5.
A quote about him after his death really says everything that needs to be known about the life of this vibrant and exciting man, “was born to rule: He had flair, flamboyance, was politically amoral and ruthless, and had an eidetic memory for faces and names, and a natural gift of command”…“[Johnson] had the reputation of being a gargantuan trencherman, a hard drinker, a Herculean lover, an epicure, a sybaritic fancier of luxuries and all good things in life”
An interesting man and an interesting story from prohibition. Boardwalk Empire tells the tale of Atlantic City in it’s true heyday, the roaring twenties and prohibition. A story of politics, gangsters, bootlegging a a whole lot more.
